OUR CLASSES

Let’s Make a Play for Kids and Adults: Students will learn how to develop their own 10-minute play through an 6-8 week immersive playwriting program. Starting from idea to a full play, the class includes a discussion about the structural components of developing plays as well as character development, establishing tone, setting, and creating structure.

The class also includes reading of plays in class, some acting, improv, art, readings, costume design, and group sharing. The last class culminates with a staged reading of the students’ 10-minute play.

For all creatives; no experience is necessary. Each class includes a Let’s Make a Play workbook. All classes can be modified.

How to Write a Monologue to Tell Your Personal Story: Monologue writing is an incredible tool to tell your own personal story. In this six-week class participants will learn how to develop character, establish setting, set tone, develop backstory, and create the world of their monologues. The class includes readings, prompts, shared text, group work, and a staged reading during the last class.

This adult workshop is for writers of all abilities–no experience is necessary. A workbook will be provided.

KIDS PLAYWRITING CLASSES

MONDAYS: LET’S MAKE A PLAY AT RANDOM FARMS

Write a play this fall! Kids will learn how to develop their own 10-minute play through this fun and immersive playwriting class. Starting from idea to the development of a short play, the class includes a discussion about the structural components of developing plays as well as character development, establishing tone, setting, and creating structure. The class also includes reading of plays, acting, improv, art, readings, costume design, and group sharing. The last class ends with a staged reading of the students’ 10-minute play. For all creatives; no experience is necessary.

LET’S MAKE A PLAY: 2-DAY WORKSHOP AT HUDSON VALLEY WRITERS CENTER
Join Serena Norr of Let’s Make a Play for a 2-day playwriting workshop! Kids will learn how to write their very own short play or monologue as well as enjoy improv, some acting, art, and a staged performance of their work. The workshop is for all; no experience necessary!

FRIDAYS: STAGE CRAFTING AT RIVERS EDGE THEATER

There’s more to theatre than acting—and in Stage Crafting, students will discover the creative magic that happens behind the scenes. From crafting costumes and stage props to writing original scenes and learning the basics of stage combat and special effects makeup, this class is perfect for curious kids who love to build, imagine, design, and create. Whether you’re a future playwright, designer, or special effects wizard, Stage Crafting is your backstage pass to the many ways you can help bring a story to life on stage. Each student will receive their own stage makeup kit and crafting journal.

TUESDAYS: How to Write Your Monologue to Tell Your Personal Story, IN-PERSON

THURSDAYS: Acting: Introduction to Acting for Non-Actors 
Have you ever wanted to act? Join Serena Norr, playwright, director, and founder of Let’s Make a Play for a fun and immersive acting experience where you will learn how to become a range of characters. This includes acting games, scene study, character choices, some improv, and learning how to take direction and modify choices.
4 Thursdays • October 9 to October 30 • 7-8:30pm • HGHS, Library • $110

THURSDAYS: Acting: Advanced Acting and Performance 
Join us for an advanced acting workshop where participants learn how to develop their acting skills into an off-book production. This includes working with scenes and a short play as well as acting games, scene study, character choices, some improv, and learning how to take direction and modify choices. The last class ends in an off-book production.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Acting for Non-Actors or equivalent.
